3D Multi-shot Steady-State Free Precession EPI: a Feasibility Study for Bright Fluid Cartilage Imaging

Motivation: High-contrast imaging of articular cartilage with synovial fluid visibility is crucial for accurate joint assessment. Conventional SSFP sequences are inefficient and have limited flip angle flexibility in high-field MRI, motivating the exploration of alternative imaging sequences. Goal(s): This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of 3D multi-shot EPI-SSFP sequences for achieving high-contrast, efficient cartilage imaging compared to conventional DESS sequence. Approach: A modified 3D multi-shot EPI sequence with FISP and TrueFISP adaptations was implemented and tested on a healthy volunteer. Results: EPI-FISP and EPI-TrueFISP demonstrated comparable or better fluid-cartilage contrast than DESS, while EPI-TrueFISP exhibited banding artifacts at 3T. Impact: The proposed EPI-SSFP sequences offer improved efficiency and high-contrast imaging for cartilage assessment, potentially enhancing clinical assessment of joint effusions with reduced scan time and flexibility in imaging parameters.
