This chapter examines Sally Wainwright’s contributions to feminist media through her works Sparkhouse, To Walk Invisible, and Gentleman Jack. Building on feminist theories of recovery and representation, the chapter explores how Wainwright illuminates women’s historical and contemporary struggles, particularly the intersecting impacts of class, gender, and identity. Through her reimagining of Wuthering Heights in Sparkhouse, Wainwright critiques class hierarchies and centres a female protagonist who embodies resistance. Similarly, in To Walk Invisible, her portrayal of the Brontë sisters reclaims their creative labour within a male-dominated literary world, emphasising their resilience and agency. The chapter highlights Gentleman Jack as a transformative queer historical drama, centred on Anne Lister, a pioneering 19th-century diarist and landowner. Wainwright's innovative storytelling combines historical authenticity with modern feminist aesthetics, using techniques like direct address and genre-blending to foreground queer desire and subvert heritage television conventions. Through these works, Wainwright not only recovers marginalised histories but also offers audiences a feminist and queer inheritance, inspiring contemporary dialogues about visibility, representation, and societal change. Her narratives bridge past and present, advocating for a more inclusive portrayal of history and identity in television.
