Résumé fourni par la source

This chapter examines Sally Wainwright’s contributions to the televisual representation of women and Northern England, situating her work within a lineage of Northern female writers like Kay Mellor and Lynda La Plante. It discusses how Wainwright’s storytelling challenges stereotypes of Northern working-class women, moving beyond the matriarchal clichés of soap opera to portray multi-dimensional characters with agency and resilience. Through her use of Northern landscapes, particularly the Calder Valley, Wainwright imbues her narratives with a distinct ‘structure of feeling,’ where place and character are intertwined to reflect emotional depth and community dynamics. The chapter also explores Wainwright’s early influences, her navigation of a male-dominated industry, and her biographical connections to the North, highlighting the ways in which her lived experiences shape her feminist-inflected storytelling. It also considers the evolution of Northern representation in popular culture and television, tracing Wainwright’s role in reshaping these narratives by centring women’s voices and perspectives. By framing the North as both a physical and emotional landscape, Wainwright challenges cultural assumptions and expands the scope of British television drama.
