Steady-state temperature field analysis and softening-hardening region discussion for Q690 butt-welded joint

High-strength steel exhibits a decrease in load-bearing capacity and ductility due to the softening and hardening phenomena in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) after welding. In this study, thermocouples were used to measure the welding temperature of an 8 mm thick Q690 steel GMAW butt-welded joint, and the hardness distribution of the joint was examined. Based on the fusion zone morphology and the thermal cycles recorded by the thermocouples, a steady-state analysis method was employed to calibrate the finite element heat source parameters. By comparing the results with the hardness distribution, it was observed that softening occurred in the peak temperature range of approximately 600°C to 850°C, while hardening was observed in regions with higher peak temperatures. Subsequently, welding thermal simulation experiments were conducted, and the softening and hardening temperature ranges were verified through tensile testing of the thermally simulated specimens.
