Addressing rangeland degradation in Namibia’s communal areas
Résumé fourni par la source
Degradation, a pressing issue of the Anthropocene, affects dryland pastoral systems worldwide. However, pastoralists’ perspectives on the viability of specific management and restoration strategies to prevent desertification are often overlooked. In this article, I draw on research conducted in Namibia’s semi-arid eastern communal areas, particularly the Okakarara Constituency. Using a social anthropological approach, I explore pastoralists’ views on the most effective and feasible methods to improve rangeland conditions and to stop desertification in their communities. I focus on potentials for transitioning from continuous grazing to incorporating a split grazing approach, with reseeding of perennial grasses. I argue that pastoralists’ insights into socio-economic and organizational conditions and challenges must be addressed to successfully introduce and sustain these measures in a post-colonial socio-ecological context.
