Abstract This chapter gives an overview of the measurement of shared decision making (SDM). Measuring SDM serves various functions, encompassing its significance in research, clinical practice, and healthcare education. The measurement of SDM is complex, as SDM has been defined in different ways. Measures can broadly be grouped into three categories: antecedents, decision process, and decision outcomes. There is no gold standard for measuring SDM, and each measurement approach comes with its own set of strengths and limitations. The precise definition of the concept being measured is pivotal, and employing a combination of methods can offer a more thorough insight into the intricate nature of SDM, leading to a more robust evaluation. Most existing measures assess a one-off decision making encounter, where decision making is initiated and completed in one discrete consultation. Especially in the realm of SDM implementation, it is important to invest in further research to improve existing measures and overcome challenges currently limiting the assessment of SDM constructs.
