eP517 Evaluating the Experience of the General Surgical Multidisciplinary Team In Parenteral Nutrition Management

Abstract Aims To assess the understanding and culture around parenteral nutrition (PN) referrals in the General Surgical multi-disciplinary team (MDT). Methods An 18-question questionnaire was dispersed over 27/9/2024 – 25/10/2024 to all members of the MDT to collect data on job title, experience with PN referral and self-reported confidence regarding PN rated on a 5-point Likert Scale, where a higher score indicated greater confidence. Results were analysed using Microsoft Excel. Results 16 responses included 8 doctors and 8 nurses. 50% (8/16) of respondents had done a PN referral before. 44% (7/16) were not aware of local trust guidelines. 69% (11/16) felt that PN was started appropriately, 38% (6/16) at the right time, 25% (4/16) too late, 6% (1/16) too soon, and 31% (5/16) were unsure. Modal confidence for recognising patients requiring PN was 5, for knowledge of referral process was 5, for PN counselling was 5, for stopping PN was 4, and for optimising enteral nutrition was 3. Albumin was considered by 50% (8/16). All participants knew that PN referral requires documentation of baseline bloods, indication for PN, condition leading to gut failure, patient weight and peripherally inserted central catheter requested. 69% (11/16) of participants felt comfortable raising concerns regarding PN to the senior General Surgical team. Conclusions These results demonstrate there are areas where our MDT feel confident identifying and referring patients for PN. We need to develop further areas to ensure we make the MDT aware of our local guidance to improve our PN management.
