Child Refugee to Wartime Scientist: a German Jewish Refugee’s Search for a British Identity

This chapter examines the wartime scientific work of Werner David, a German Jewish child refugee who arrived in Britain in 1933, and suggests that the contribution he was able to make to the British war effort played a pivotal role in his search for a British identity. After suffering what he regarded as ‘the disgraceful injustice’ of being labelled an ‘enemy alien’ and of being interned, his war work for Shell and his development of a water displacing anti-corrosion fluid used during the D-Day landings, became central to his later applications for a Certificate of Naturalization, which was granted in 1947.
