Staff perspectives of a non-medical resource for supporting voice-hearers

Background Let’s Talk about Voices (LTAV) is a freely accessible online resource to support mental health workers to work with people who hear voices using a Hearing Voices approach.Methods In this mixed methods study, 160 mental health workers completed a questionnaire on their subjective experience of the resource. A subset of 21 respondents participated in in-depth interviews to provide richer insights. Fixed response questions were analysed descriptively and qualitative data were analysed using qualitative content analysis.Results Almost all questionnaire respondents rated LTAV as helpful and relevant. Interviewees valued that it was versatile, appropriate, engaging, optimistic and easy to use. Most believed that the resource had made a difference to them and their ability to support voice-hearers in a wide range of ways. While most new users had used or planned to use LTAV, challenges to use were identified. These included: service duration; the need for assistance for consumers with literacy or cognitive challenges; policy/protocol in some clinical settings; consumer distrust; and the need for guidelines for less confident workers.Discussion The research suggests that LTAV is experienced as a useful resource for mental health workers who work with people who hear voices.
