Abstract In the field of material surface treatment, laser marking technology, as the core means of non-contact precision machining, has been widely used in the surface functionalization treatment of polymer materials. Polycarbonate (PC), as a typical high-performance engineering plastic, has excellent mechanical strength, high transmittance, and good thermal stability. However, its infrared absorption coefficient at a wavelength of 1064 nm is low, making it difficult to achieve excellent laser marking performance, and there is a lack of research and methods for laser marking color patterns. This study focuses on PC-based, laser-sensitive thin films and investigates a novel laser photosensitizer antimony doped tin oxide (ATO). ATO and spiro [1,3,3-trimethylindole-(6’-bromobenzodihydropyran)] (SP-Br) co-doped multi-color laser sensitive PC thin films were prepared, and a new multi-color laser sensitive PC thin film was developed. Black-and-white pattern marking and orange-yellow color pattern marking were achieved under non-wavelength-specific lasers at 1064 nm and 355 nm, respectively.
