Physical Activity among Native Hawai'ians and Pacific Islanders
Le résumé fourni par la source
Native Hawai’ian/Pacific Islanders (NHPI) in the United States are one of the most racially diverse groups, with 56% of their members ethnically identifying with more than one race and/or an NHPI subgroup. National survey data have shown NHPI adults’ and teens’ physical activity levels were relatively high in comparison to other ethnic/racial minority populations and comparable to Whites. However, NHPIs experience increased health disparities in physical activity-related diseases such as obesity/overweight, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cancer. Community/infrastructure support for physical activity, such as well-maintained parks and sidewalks on neighborhood streets, is often suboptimal for NHPI populations. Traditional activities of NHPIs such as hula, surfing, and ocean voyaging show great promise not only for increasing energy expenditure but also for improving participation and maintenance of the activities because of the historical, cultural, and ancestral significance of these activities to NHPI populations.
