Work injury projections are the foundation of an optimal staffing model for an occupational health service. The first step is to identify the number of individuals working in the market to be serviced by conducting employer surveys and/or studying demographic data. The manager and owners of an occupational health service must then derive an estimate of how many employees it will take to start up and then run the occupational health service. The staff mix must evolve as the clinic matures, but there needs to be enough staff capacity in the initial clinic opening to cover the needs of the employers whose workers will be coming. This will require some balancing in the formula that “if you build it, he will come.”
