This chapter describes the context surrounding newborns (birth to 2 months). Newborns arrive and develop in multiple material and social ecologies, and thus, we cannot understand newborn (or infant or child) development without knowing more about these several contexts and their sway over development. Families, regardless of their structure, share the primary goal of nurturing newborn offspring. Within-family experiences may have major impacts during early life. Parents provide both direct and indirect effects on their newborns. Direct effects include their genetic endowment and how they parent. Indirect effects over parenting and newborn development include parent age, stress, parity, and the interparental relationship. Larger social and cultural contexts also shape newborn life. Family socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and culture exert direct and indirect influences on parents, on parenting, and so on newborns.
