Environmental and Climate Impacts of the Metaverse

ABSTRACT This paper explores the environmental and climate impacts of Metaverse technologies and their social implications. Current literature predominantly discusses the potential positive and negative effects of the Metaverse on the environment and climate change but lacks practical solutions. This integrative literature review aims to provide a deeper understanding of the Metaverse's impact on environmental sustainability and climate, offer solutions to mitigate negative impacts, and examine the social implications. The review is grounded in Dwivedi et al.'s three concepts: energy consumption by digital technologies, CO 2 emissions from data use, and the environmental effects of e‐waste. The research methodology is an integrative literature review design, analyzing multiple sources for a comprehensive understanding. Findings highlight five critical impact areas: energy consumption, e‐waste, rare earth metals and conflict minerals, changes in physical travel, and encouraging sustainable behaviors. The review emphasizes the importance of renewable resources, recycling, inclusivity, and collaboration to mitigate negative impacts. The implications of these findings may influence the development, adoption, regulation, and social impact of Metaverse technologies. Future research should include experimental studies on energy sources and hardware solutions, along with replication and comparative case studies of sustainability interventions.
