A Low-Cost BJT-Based Active EMI Filter for CM EMI Suppression in Power Converters

Due to the continuous switching of the power devices, electromagnetic interference (EMI) is generated when power converter works. Compared to passive EMI filter, active EMI filter (AEF) occupies less volume and is a promising way to solve the EMI problem. An AEF for suppressing the common mode (CM) EMI in power converters is proposed in this article. Different from most of the existing AEF which is operational amplifier based, the proposed AEF here is bipolar junction transistor (BJT) based. The only active components in this AEF are the BJTs and thus operational amplifier is no longer needed which is beneficial for reducing the cost of the AEF. The structure of the AEF is introduced first and the performance of this AEF is evaluated. The AEF is tested in a boost converter and the experiment results showed that the proposed AEF can suppress the CM EMI well while keeping the volume of this AEF small.
