The occurrence of dissociative symptoms in adolescents referred to a child and adolescent psychiatric setting Introduction: Dissociative symptoms in adolescents are complex manifestations resulting from disruptions in integrated functioning. The relationship between dissociation and traumatic events has been extensively documented in the literature. Untreated dissociation can have severe consequences for development. Despite growing awareness, dissociative symptoms are often underdiagnosed. Objective: This study aims to assess the prevalence of dissociative symptoms in adolescents on the waiting list for diagnostic assessment or treatment within a child and adolescent psychiatric service. Additionally, it examines the presence of other trauma-related symptoms and the relationship between dissociative symptoms and emotional and behavioral difficulties. Method: Eleven adolescents (mean age 14.27 years) completed three self-report questionnaires: the Adolescent Dissociative Experiences Scale (A-DES), the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC), and the Youth Self Report (YSR). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Among the participants, 72.4% scored in the clinical range on the A-DES, with 54.4% indicating pathological dissociation. The TSCC confirmed these findings (72.7% clinical scores). Trauma-related symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress, were prominently present. Adolescents in the clinical groups of the YSR scales, such as Anxiety Problems and Externalizing Problems, reported higher dissociation scores on average. Due to the small sample size (N=11), these findings remain exploratory. Conclusion: The results suggest that dissociative symptoms and trauma-related symptoms frequently occur in adolescents within a tertiary care setting. These findings align with existing literature. It emphasizes the need for systematic screening and targeted treatment to mitigate negative developmental outcomes.
