• Adopt a multidimensional analytical framework that transcends the traditional dichotomy between production and consumption. • A new indicator system was developed to evaluate green production and consumption systems based on green innovation. • The spatial aggregation types and temporal development characteristics of CCD were discussed. • Further analysis of the dynamic interactive relationships within the PCC multidimensional system. This study employs a comprehensive analytical framework to examine the green upgrading and transformation pathways of production and consumption in the new era, utilizing panel data from 30 Chinese provinces spanning 2013 to 2023. From the perspective of green innovation, this study develops a novel PCC (production-consumption-carbon) Multidimensional indicator system, and systematically examines the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the PPC system’s coupling coordination degree (CCD) and delves into the dynamic interrelationships within the system. Methodologically, this study employs an integrated methodological framework combining the Coupling Coordination Degree model, spatial autocorrelation analysis, and Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) model to conduct an in-depth quantitative analysis. The findings are as follows: (1) The comprehensive level of green production (GPL), green consumption (GCL) and carbon emission efficiency (CE) in China is generally increasing year by year, with GCL consistently higher than GPL overall. (2) The provincial distribution of CCD in the PCC multi-dimensional system remains uneven, with the overall average level at a marginally uncoordinated stage and significant developmental disparities across regions. (3) The CCD of PCC multi-dimensional system shows significant spatial positive correlation and aggregation pattern. (4) There are significant interaction effects among the three subsystems, and all of them show the trend of self-reinforcement. The GCL and GPL systems have a positive impact on CE. From a long-term development perspective, GCL has a greater impact on CE than GPL.
