Fast-dissolving/-disintegrating dosage forms (FDDFs) are the class of dosage forms that readily disintegrate or dissolve when coming in contact with an aqueous system. This oral dosage form leads to the quicker distribution of active moiety at the application site. Faster disintegration is a crucial factor for these dosage forms. With the advent of time, FDDFs loaded with herbal active compounds have increased significantly. Research has focused on formulating herbal FDDFs and exploring natural compounds such as mucilages, gums, and other modified/unmodified polysaccharides as disintegrants. Low toxicity and fewer adverse effects of herbal medicines have resulted in various research attempts on formulations of oral disintegrating tablets, oral disintegrating films, and oral disintegrating pellets. Some formulations are undergoing clinical trials, while others are already available globally. Despite this progress, herbal FDDFs encounter challenges such as regulatory hurdles, quality control issues, and concerns regarding taste and palatability. Overcoming these obstacles is crucial as herbal FDDFs have the potential to impact the economy significantly. Addressing these challenges, herbal FDDFs can offer a safe and effective alternative to conventional treatments. This chapter explores herbal FDDFs, highlighting the principles of fast disintegration, current research on herbal modern and traditional medicines, FDDFs of phytoconstituents, clinical trials, marketed products, and the challenges associated with FDDFs.
