Radiation carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) is widely used in free space optical communication systems to realize parallel communication channels onto the same optical link through high-dimensional OAM mode multiplexing. OAM beams are generated at the transmission stage via holographic laser beam shaping, or by passing a standard Gaussian beam through a spiral phase plate. In this work we assess the effects of alignment errors on the quality of the OAM wavefronts generated with these techniques. We compare interferometric data to numerical wavefront propagation to extract useful figures of merit. We also numerically study the impact of different illumination conditions and of the main wavefront aberrations of the illuminating beam on the amplitude and phase properties of the resulting OAM modes. Applications to real long-distance optical communication scenarios are discussed.
