Jellyfish Aquaculture Current Practices and Future Developments

Over the last two decades there has been a growing interest on jellyfish research, mostly due to their high-end applications. Although increased efforts have been put forward to improve husbandry techniques and upscaling methods for their production at commercial scales, the pipeline leading to their full exploitation is still on its infancy. Further research and several technical breakthroughs are still needed to fully expand the use of these bioresources to a larger and more sustainable scale. This chapter describes the present status of jellyfish aquaculture, including the culture methods and life support systems currently available for this end, and provides an overview of the potential applications of jellyfish as resources for both food and non-food uses. Current constraints concerning jellyfish aquaculture and their successful establishment are also discussed. This chapter also provides an overview on the future development of jellyfish aquaculture as an important endeavour to safeguard a stable and regular supply of this living resource.
