Dear Authors, Thank you for your valuable comments regarding treatment of anaemia in children1 which we reviewed thoroughly: We would like to add the following information to our position paper on the approach to anaemia in gastrointestinal disease2: Ferric carboxymaltose is the only intravenous iron formulation approved by the European Medicines Agency for adolescents ≥14 years3 and by the Food and Drug Administration for children ≥1 year.4 Other intravenous formulations such as iron sucrose, ferric gluconate, low-molecular-weight iron dextran, and iron isomaltoside are currently approved in some countries or for specific indications. Hypophosphatasaemia is an identified risk of treatment with ferric carboxymaltose5 that requires appropriate management, as elaborated in the prescribing information.6 We agree that alternative oral iron strategies, such as alternate-day or weekly dosing regimens, may not be significantly disadvantaged compared to daily oral supplementation in terms of the total amount of absorbed iron and may enhance treatment adherence.7 The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
