Society is increasingly concerned about the production process in livestock production and demands that the welfare of the domestic animals is taken more into consideration. A methodology to measure the occurrence of welfare related disease in cattle and swine herds and transforming this information into a welfare assessment is being developed. Quarterly systematic examinations of cattle and swine herds with clinical assessment of degree and duration provide reliable information about the actual health related welfare status of the herd. Combined with event data from various sources and information on behaviour, systems description and systems application a welfare assessment can be established. In order to improve welfare a problem orientated approach and close contact with the farmer is recommended. In this process quantitative as well as qualitative methodologies should be applied.
