Therapeutic Effects of Terpenoids in Breast Cancer

Cancer chemoprevention is defined as the use of natural or synthetic agents that reverse, suppress or arrest carcinogenic and/or malignant phenotype progression toward invasive cancer. Phytochemicals obtained from various sources have shown potential in suppressing experimental carcinogenesis in various organs. After the approval of taxol in 1993, the great arrival of terpenoids in the field of anti-cancer drugs, is still highly significant for the treatment of refractory ovarian and breast cancers. Research has been carried out over the decades and other prominent natural terpenoids have become crucial for the modern pharmacotherapy of breast cancer. Though, due to the rapid development of drug resistance, effective treatments for progressive breast cancers demanding cytotoxic chemotherapy represent a major clinical need. Therefore, groundbreaking agents effective in long-term chemotherapy are urgently needed. The present chapter will highlight the biological effects of terpenoids as chemopreventive agents on breast carcinogenesis, and the utility of transitional biomarkers as indicators of premalignancy. These compounds seem to be promising to overcome breast cancer treatment failure. Though, despite the exciting activities, additional preclinical researches are needed in further breast cancer cell/tumor models in vitro and in vivo carcinogenesis.
