Therapeutic Role of Glycosides in Breast Cancer

Glycosides are natural compounds that are composed of a sugar that is attached with a non-sugar moiety. Widely known glycosides include digoxin, digitoxin and ouabain. Glycosides are effective and well utilized in the treatment of congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. However, their emerging role in the prevention and management of proliferative diseases such as cancers is lesser known. Within the past five years, studies have revealed that glycosides play important roles in the cell signal transduction mechanisms and can selectively target breast tumors without influencing the proliferation of normal cells. New findings have revealed that glycosides as single agents or in combination could prove to be valuable therapeutic agents and result in a form of targeted cancer chemotherapy. This chapter focuses on recent pharmacological findings of glycosides against breast cancer and the therapeutic roles of glycosides in cancer.
