If you are a part of the mosquito and vector control field in the U.S.—or even aware of it—you might have seen more advocacy for increases in three areas: training and education to manage vector-borne diseases (e.g., increased attention from Powassan virus, Zika virus, locally acquired malaria, Dengue virus); public feedback regarding mosquito and vector control efficacy and safety; and pressure to evaluate current training, education, and preparedness for vector-borne disease threats. For example, the American Mosquito Control Association’s (AMCA) Best Practices for Integrated Mosquito Management manual describes the necessity to regularly and proactively assess the needs of local vector control programs to make decisions that ensure that they function at an adequate level (AMCA 2021). These needs assessments can explore capacity and capability around different program components including (but not limited to) budget, surveillance, mapping, insecticide resistance, efficacy testing, community engagement, and species management. In other words, regularly evaluating and adjusting operational capacities based on data ensures that a program can provide consistent protection to those living within its jurisdiction. However, mosquitoes and other vectors do not respect boundaries defined by humans, and programs across the country often vary in the resources available for their operation. Given this reality, state, regional, and national needs assessments must also occur at all levels to make certain that programs protect all Americans from vector-borne disease.
