(Invited) Electrochemical Evaluation of Some Amide-Type Ionic Liquids after Irradiation with Gamma Rays

The radiation tolerance of ionic liquids is important for space and nuclear applications, such as rechargeable batteries for satellites and space stations and the extraction and separation of radioactive species from nuclear waste. There are some reports on the degradation of some ionic liquids under gamma ray and electron beam irradiation. However, there are not many reports on the electrochemical investigation of irradiated ionic liquids. In the present study, some ionic liquids irradiated by gamma rays were electrochemically evaluated. The ionic liquids composed of bis(trifluoromethylsufonyl)amide (TFSA–) with different quaternary ammonium cations were irradiated by gamma rays at 0.5-2.0 MGy. The mass loss of the irradiated ionic liquids was less than 1% even after irradiation at 2.0 MGy. A cathodic current was observed after gamma ray irradiation. The cathodic current was found to disappear after vacuum drying the irradiated ionic liquid at 100°C, indicating that the decomposition products were volatile. The separately synthesized protic ionic liquids gave the similar cathodic current, indicating that the decomposition products are the cations whose alkyl side chain was cleaved by gamma ray irradiation.
