An Analysis of Accident Occurrence Areas by Process of Construction Industry Fatal Accidents by Using SIF Data : Focusing on Building Construction
Le résumé fourni par la source
This study investigated accident occurrence areas in 1,154 fatal construction accidents that took place between 2019 and 2021, using SIF (Serious Injury & Fatality) data. Recognizing the limitations of government industrial accident statistics in identifying specific accident occurrence areas, the Korea Standard Industrial Classification was applied to specify these areas by construction sub-sector. Focusing on building construction projects, a frequency analysis was conducted on accidents involving specialized trades by construction phase. In addition, accident types and causative agents were analyzed for each phase to identify major accident-prone areas. The analysis revealed that 43% of all fatal construction accidents occurred in building construction projects, with structural and finishing works accounting for 80.5% of those cases. In structural work, the main accident-prone sectors were scaffolding and formwork, concrete and rebar work, and steel frame and related structures, with falls from scaffolds, steel frames, and openings being the most common causes. In finishing work, fatalities were concentrated in roofing and interior/exterior wall construction, with falls from roofs, edges, and various openings identified as the primary causes of death. The fact that falling accidents account for an overwhelmingly high proportion of accidents during structural construction and finishing work proves that basic safety measures are not yet being implemented at construction sites.
