Compensation networks are an essential component of inductive wireless power transfer systems; their proper sizing increases the power transmission and the efficiency. This paper presents a systematic methodology, based on a specific set of design targets, for tuning the compensation networks in resonant inductive power transfer systems. Three modelling criteria are introduced to evaluate the impact of the parasitic resistances of the circuit elements within the compensation networks. For each modelling criteria, the tuning formulas are derived. Four compensation networks (suitable for electric vehicle charging) with increased number of circuit elements are selected. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the tuning methodology and highlight the role of dissipative effects on the transmission efficiency and dynamic properties of the compensated coreless transformer.
