Transgender adults’ narratives of gender identity and access to care: A timeline study

Despite the growing number of people in the US who identify as transgender, physical and mental healthcare practitioners often lack knowledge about the needs of transgender patients. Moreover, numerous studies provide evidence that transgender adults experience disparities in healthcare access due to discrimination based on their identities. We examine transgender adults’ (n = 50) narratives about gender identity, healthcare, and the relationship between the two throughout their lifetimes via analysis of written timeline data. We qualitatively coded 930 written entries and examined response patterns. Participants depicted the emergence and solidification of their gender identity and seeking healthcare as processes that take place both intermittently and across their lifespans. Our findings illustrate the complexity and diversity of transgender individuals’ experiences of finding their gender identities, navigating the healthcare system, and the intertwined nature of these processes.
