Setting up a comprehensive traffic injuries registry system in hospitals: a qualitative study on barriers and challenges

BACKGROUND: This study demonstrated barriers to and challenges of setting up a comprehensive RTI registry in selected hospitals in Tabriz, Iran. METHODS: Data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews with recommended involved professionals and hospitalized patients due to Road Traffic Crash (RTC). The participants were selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis was carried out utilizing the contractual content analysis approach and MAXQDA software. RESULTS: Four main themes and 12 sub themes emerged from the analysis of the interviews. The first main theme was the medical staff performance which include low accuracy in recording data by physicians and nurses and a high workload of medical staff. The second main theme was resources and financial facilities which included insufficient human resources, and financial deficits. Management system challenges were the third main theme which included sub-themes such as the lack of cross-sectorial cooperation, loose intra-hospital cooperation, lack of follow-up, etc. The last main theme was challenges related to patients which include lack of patient collaboration and Lack of patient’s relative’s cooperation. CONCLUSIONS: To eliminate the barriers and challenges of the RTIs registry system, as well as improve the management system and provide financial facilities, it is necessary to apply training and incentive policies, such as continuing education about the registry of RTIs in hospitals.
