How to raise a moral teen: Caregiving styles of moral parents

Moral identity represents an individual’s commitment to moral principles. Caregivers’ norms and parenting influence adolescents’ moral identity. However, the specific impact of caregivers’ moral identity and parenting on their children’s moral identity is less studied empirically. This study investigates how parenting, (parental warmth, autonomy support, and strictness), and caregivers’ moral identity are associated with adolescents’ moral identity. A questionnaire study with 201 adolescents (MAge = 13.13, SDAge = 1.46, 48.8% boys) and their caregivers was conducted. Parenting was evaluated by caregivers. Both, caregivers and adolescents rated their own moral identity. Caregivers’ moral identity but not parenting alone prevailed as a significant statistical predictor of adolescents’ moral identity. Moderation analyses were conducted separately for each parenting characteristic and showed that parental warmth, autonomy support, and strictness each moderated the relationship between caregivers’ and adolescents’ moral identities. The study highlights the role of caregivers’ moral identity in adolescent moral identity development.
