Developing a Productive Cooperative Small-Group Learning Environment

This chapter begins by describing a variety of research-based strategies for developing productive group dynamics in the classroom and individual small groups. To deal with classroom-management issues, the chapter goes on to describe “refocus signal” strategies and a variety of techniques for pacing group work. There are also suggestions for working with reluctant participants, dominators, and introverted students and for sharing work and credit fairly among group members. There are many ways that teachers can support each other as they face the challenges of radical change in their familiar classroom routines. The chapter provides three ways to keep focused on basic principles of cooperative learning—attention to Kagan&s;s PIES principles, the five key elements of the Johnsons&s; Learning Together approach, and Cohen and Lotan&s;s model for Complex Instruction.
