This chapter begins with an explanation of desirable features in problem solving and reasoning tasks set for student small-group work. Then it explicates general and specific guidelines for student and teacher actions during group work. With those guidelines in place, the chapter introduces and explains use of cooperative structures that teachers can employ to organize small-group work. The descriptions of simple and complex cooperative structures are accompanied by sample mathematical tasks to which the structures are well suited.
