1035 Passive Sensing in Remote Monitoring: A Systematic Review

Abstract Aim This study aims to evaluate the impact of passive sensing technologies in remote monitoring on clinical and healthcare-related outcomes. The review explores the types of passive sensing technologies used, their applications across patient populations, and their influence on clinical metrics. Method A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42024511755). A comprehensive search of Medline, EMBASE, HMIC, and PsycINFO databases was performed. Studies focusing on passive sensing in remote monitoring were included, while abstracts, reviews, and studies with insufficient outcome data were excluded. Data extraction and quality assessment were independently performed by two reviewers. Results A total of 26 studies were included, exploring passive sensing technologies such as wrist-worn devices, smartphones, and in-home sensors. Applications spanned diverse patient populations, including Parkinson’s disease, dementia, cancer, cardiopulmonary, and musculoskeletal conditions. Passive sensing demonstrated feasibility for monitoring activity, sleep, and physiological parameters, with several studies correlating sensor-derived metrics with clinical assessments. Outcomes included early detection of deterioration, enhanced functional monitoring, and potential reductions in hospitalizations. Feedback highlighted usability and privacy concerns, emphasizing the need for user-friendly designs. Conclusions Passive sensing technologies show promise in enhancing remote monitoring by enabling continuous, unobtrusive data collection, improving patient care, and informing personalized interventions. Future research should address algorithm refinement, privacy concerns, and long-term usability to optimize clinical outcomes.
