Abstract Aim To evaluate the efficacy of a combined near-peer and surgeon-led teaching model in enhancing understanding and retention of cardiac anatomy and cardiothoracic surgery among participants in an international teaching series (ISATS). Method This prospective study focused on a single teaching session on cardiac anatomy and cardiothoracic surgery, attended by medical students, healthcare professionals, and surgical trainees. Functional anatomical and surgical understanding was evaluated using 8 very-short-answer-questions (VSAQs), administered at three time points: pre-session, post-session, and 4 weeks post-session. Data were collected anonymously via electronic submissions, and responses were manually marked. Microsoft Excel across the three assessments. Results The session included 286 participants, 42.7% were clinical medical students, 36.4% were pre-clinical medical students, and the remaining were doctors (16.4%), and other healthcare students (4.5%). 25.5% of the participants attended from the United Kingdom, and 74.5% were located internationally. The average score prior to the session was 49.78%, which increased to 65.38% immediately post-session, marking a 31.37% improvement. At 4 weeks post-session, the average score further increased to 72.19%, reflecting a 45.01% improvement compared to pre-session scores and a 10.41% gain over post-session scores. Conclusions This innovative teaching model, combining near-peer and surgeon-led approaches, shows promise in enhancing surgical anatomical knowledge and retention. It has potential for integration into medical curricula to improve surgical education. Larger, more diverse studies are needed to validate its effectiveness, and an international study involving 15 virtual sessions is currently underway.
