384 The Role of Bleep Simulations in Turning Medical Students into Doctors

Abstract Aim To assess and improve the confidence of four post-finals medical students (F0s) in responding to bleeps and managing patients in a simulated on-call shift that represented the demands expected of a Foundation Year 1 Doctor (FY1). Method Two FY1 Doctors created a bleep simulation for F0s at a teaching hospital in the UK. We designed scenarios simulating issues facing FY1s on-call in general surgery. We used a bleep to alert the students of each issue, which allowed us to assess the ability of the F0s to manage and prioritise these issues in the context of the added pressures that occur in an on-call shift. Students were observed by FY1s who provided feedback at the end of the simulation. Pre-simulation, the F0s were asked about their confidence answering bleeps and their ability to work an on-call shift at the level of an FY1 on a 10-point Likert scale. This was compared against answers to identical questions post-simulation. Results All F0s reported improvements in their confidence answering bleeps (pre-simulation average 2.75, post-simulation average 7.75) and their ability to work an on-call shift (average 4 pre-simulation, 7.5 post-simulation). By the end of the simulation, all F0s felt more confident in responding to bleeps, managing patients and prioritising. Conclusions Bleep simulations are a valuable form of medical education that improve the confidence of students in the ability to fulfil the practical aspects of the role of an FY1 doctor, they can be delivered by FY1 Doctors. This value applies to students who have completed their final exams.
