954 Perceptions of Obesity and Bariatric Surgery Among Newly Qualified Doctors: A Multi-Hospital Survey Study

Abstract Aim This study aimed to assess awareness, knowledge, and perceptions of Obesity and Bariatric Surgery (BS) among Foundation doctors (FY1). Method An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to FY1 (n=70) doctors across several hospitals in South-East London between August and October 2024. The survey gathered data on attitudes, knowledge, and familiarity with obesity and BS, in addition to prior training and experience. Responses were analysed to identify educational gaps and areas for curriculum improvement. Results The questionnaire response rate was 86% (n=60), 55% were female, 48% aged between 25-30. Of the responders, 43% viewed obesity as self-inflicted, and 82% believed obesity to be a social burden. BS was considered effective by 68%, 22% felt it was the most effective method of sustained weight loss, and 73% felt it should be funded by the NHS. However, 10% regarded BS as a cosmetic procedure. BMI cut off for obesity was correctly identified by 62%. Familiarity with bariatric procedures varied, with least recognition for One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (35%). Only 32% felt comfortable in managing BS patients, with 78% reporting no formal undergraduate training. Majority (88%) supported incorporating more training on obesity and BS into medical curriculum. Conclusions FY1 doctors showed limited confidence in managing BS patients, likely due to insufficient formal training and specific gaps in knowledge. These findings highlight the need for further education on obesity and bariatric surgery in undergraduate and postgraduate medical training to better prepare doctors for the growing prevalence of obesity interventions.
