Exploring perception dimensions of subjective well-being of residents in the city hosting major sports events: Exemplified by the 31st Summer Universiade

Enhancing the subjective well-being of urban residents is important for the development of the modern city. Major sports events, as highly anticipated sports extravaganzas, not only exert subtle yet pervasive influences on the host-city economy, society, and culture but also have a significant connection with the host-city residents' subjective well-being. Revealing the correlation between major sports events and subjective well-being is essential for enhancing the host-city residents' subjective well-being. Using the 31st Summer Universiade as a case study, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, with Part 1 identifying a theoretical model of the perception dimensions of subjective well-being of residents in the city hosting major sports events through semi-structured interviews and grounded theory. Part 2 employs questionnaire surveys to further explore the intensity of the effect of various dimensions on the host-city residents' subjective well-being within the theoretical model. The results indicate that the perception dimensions of subjective well-being of residents in the city hosting major sports events consist of four dimensions: host-city development status, host-city residents' social perception, host-city residents' sports experiences, and host-city residents' living situation. Furthermore, in terms of path coefficients, the influence of host-city residents' living situation on host-city residents' subjective well-being is the most significant, followed by the host-city development status and host-city residents' sports experiences, while the role of host-city residents' social perception is relatively weak. These findings can provide urban managers with deeper insights into the beneficial effects of major sports events on the host city, such as promoting economic development, enhancing the city's image, improving infrastructure, building sports atmosphere, and accumulating social capital, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for formulating policies and measures to enhance the host-city residents' subjective well-being.
