Le résumé fourni par la source

Leachates are liquid byproducts formed during water percolation through solid waste in a landfill areas. They are often characterized by the presence of chemicals that, upon entering the groundwater, may pose a potential threat to ecosystems. Analysis of the chemical composition of leachates and their cytotoxicity is, therefore, crucial to identify potential threats and developing appropriate management strategies. To determine how the leachate from modern security systems and seals that prevent pollutants from entering the environment could affect the cytotoxicity of organisms, we used the midgut epithelium of the model organism D. melanogaster. Cell degeneration, cell regeneration, DNA damage, and cell ultrastructure were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. Cytotoxic effects were observed in the epithelial cells of the midgut in male and female fruit flies. However, they occurred in a different manner and in different periods in the two sexes, suggesting that different mechanisms occurred. Degenerative processes caused by oxidative stress were triggered, but also repair processes, which unfortunately did not allow the cells to survive in the case of prolonged exposure of animals to the stressor. The results suggest that, although the collected leachate originated from modern security systems, it can be toxic to organisms and the environment.
