Fetal nuchal translucency – a screening tool in predicting congenital cardiac abnormalities

Objectives: To find accuracy of the nuchal translucency to detect congenital heart defects at 11 -13+6 weeks of gestation in a tertiary care centre of Tamil Nadu.Methods: This observational study was conducted in department of obstetrics and Gynecology from the period of June 2022 -December 2022.This study included 150 singleton pregnant women with gestational age between 11-13+6weeks to evaluate the efficacy of nuchal translucency in detecting congenital heart disease.Result: Around 14% had their age ≤ 20 years, 20% 21-25 years, 34.6% 26-30 years, 20% 31-35 years and 11.3% more than 35 years.In our study 45.3% were primigravida and 54.6% multigravidas.Around 98% were educated and 2% uneducated.Nuchal translucency thickness in predicting the congenital heart defects had a sensitivity of 100% (CI: 30% to 100%); specificity of 93.88% (CI: 88.70% to 97.16%); negative predictive value of 100%.Conclusion: An increased NT is an important criterion for identifying foetuses eligible for specialized echocardiography.When TR and/or an abnormal ductus venous doppler flow profile is found in association with an increased NT, the risk of CHD increases and early exclusion of CHD is warranted.
