The Monstrosity of the Crucifixion

Abstract The spectacle of Jesus’ public execution horrifies moderns, offending decorum and meaning and creating fear and disgust affects. Nonetheless, Jesus’ crucifixion soon became central to much of Western Christianity, and horror cinema built promiscuously upon it. In this context, Jesus films, which center on passion spectacles, all become so many horror films. Following the gospels’ own lead, readers typically monsterize Jesus’ opponents. The true monsters stalking the passion, however, are Jesus, God, the gospel, and bloodthirsty scholars who feed relentlessly on the passion narrative. Reading the particularly monstrous Gospel of Mark with horror cinema creates monstrous Markan Jesuses in He Who Must Die, Mark: The Possession, The Exorcist’s Cross, and The Haunting Cross. Mark’s monster God features in Frankenstein Mark, Dracula Mark, and Slasher Mark. Mark, and its scholarly readers, is itself the monster in Mark’s Death Gospel, as well as in what is perhaps the most common scholarly reading of Mark.
