This chapter follows an idea put forward by Jonathan Sterne to explore Sound Studies as a form of “ferment” across disciplines, considering how, although individual scholars use the issue of sound to engage with different disciplines, many of them seem to be working from the same score. This chapter starts by exploring prominent Sound Studies books published since 2000, then backs up historically to show how, over time, the field has intersected with other forms of sensory studies, the study of oral literature, film aesthetics and with historical work on various recording technologies. From there, this chapter moves on to the relationship between sound and space, an issue that has animated theorists ranging from students of the Acoustic Ecology movement to contemporary scholars of mobile technologies and scholars studying sound in spaces of cinema and other mediated experiences, including radio and podcasting. This discussion flows into recent studies about sound’s role in how we understand publics, ability, bodies, sexuality, race, gender and other forms of social difference. Finally, this chapter concludes by considering ways in which Sound Studies and musicology have begun to productively interact, while also highlighting efforts to overcome the longstanding Western bias of the field.
