Le résumé fourni par la source

Due to the high concentration of rare earth elements (REE) and the tremendous volume, the deep sea REE-rich mud has gained significant attention as a potential resource. The bioapatites, mainly fossil fish teeth and bones, were thought to be the main host mineral in the pelagic REE-rich mud. However, based on the linear relationship between the contents of total REE (ΣREE) and P 2 O 5 in bulk samples, ΣREE in biogenic apatites should statistically exceed 20,000 ppm, which notably surpassed the published ΣREE of fish teeth. Since the REEs enriched in fish teeth during early diagenesis, the fine-grained teeth could expected to contain higher ΣREE to balance the ΣREE budgets in sediments. This study using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) investigated the geochemical and structural characteristics of bioapatites, particularly fine-grained (38.5–65 μm) fish teeth, in the deep-sea REE-rich mud. The results showed a negligible difference between the ΣREE of fine-grained and relative coarse-grained (>65 μm) fish teeth. Despite being an important REE-bearing mineral, fish teeth, including both fine- and coarse- grained, showed insufficient REE enrichment capacity to account for the ΣREE contents in bulk sediments. Our findings suggested that other types of apatites, such as authigenic and amorphous apatites, may need to be explored to achieve the mass balance of ΣREE in bulk deep-sea REE-rich sediments.
