Quantifying erosion relative to topography is essential for understanding landscape evolution. Cosmogenic ¹⁰Be in river sediment is widely used to estimate catchment-wide denudation over millennial timescales. These rates help identify drivers such as tectonic uplift, periglacial processes, precipitation gradients, bedrock erodibility, landslides, and hillslope morphology. However, isolating specific controls is difficult, especially where erosion–topography correlations are weak, such as beyond slope angle thresholds (e.g., >30° in the European Alps). Furthermore, denudation rates from large catchments (>10¹–10³ km²) integrate signals across heterogeneous topographies and timescales, challenging assumptions of sediment mixing. In these settings, sediment storage and reworking further can obscure the effect individual erosion controls. Here, we investigate the influence of topographic heterogeneity on ¹⁰Be-derived denudation rates in two alpine basins in the Central Swiss Alps separated by <50 km. These host 16 nested sub-catchments (2–340 km²) with contrasting topography - one with gentle hillslopes and at low-elevation, the other steeper, at higher elevations and more variable. Combined with denudation rates from 45 published ¹⁰Be concentrations from nearby basins, our data reveal significant variability at <50 km² scales, increasing with topographic heterogeneity. On a regional scale, denudation rates correlate more strongly with local surface uplift than with present-day hydro-climatic conditions. At the same time, substantial local-scale variations reflect the effect of landslides, glacial sediment export, and periglacial erosion on surface erosion, emphasizing the need for sampling smaller, topographically homogenous catchments in steep environments to elucidate potential geomorphologic controls.
