Significant regional variations exist in the epidemiology of AKI globally, with underreporting being particularly common in low and low-middle income countries (LLMICs). The latter is due to lack of standardized AKI reporting, absence of representative epidemiological studies, and an overall limited nephrology workforce.1 Latin America (LATAM), comprised of many LLMICs, has a reportedly higher incidence of AKI among hospitalized patients than North America and Europe (31% vs. 19% and 25%, respectively),2 though this could be misrepresented due to inconsistent AKI definitions, regional variations within LATAM, and publication bias.
