Background: With over 360 million people worldwide living with knee osteoarthritis (OA), patient education is vital. Knee OA significantly impacts quality of life, yet patients often face challenges in finding comprehensive, personalized resources to manage their condition. Recognizing the need for patient-centered support, the Global Healthy Living Foundation (GHLF) developed OA Compass, a free online decision-making tool. This innovative resource empowers patients with knee OA to take control of their health journey by providing tailored guidance, real-life patient stories, and evidence-based strategies for symptom management and treatment decision-making. Objectives: To provide patients with accessible and comprehensive information on knee OA across all stages of their knee OA journey. To empower patients to make informed decisions about their care and treatment. To encourage patients to employ joint decision-making with their healthcare team. Methods: The development of OA Compass began with a thorough assessment of patient needs and education gaps, conducted through interviews with a diverse group of patients living with knee osteoarthritis and orthopedic surgeons. These interviews provided valuable insights into the challenges patients face in understanding their diagnosis, evaluating treatment options, and preparing for surgery. Key themes from these interviews were transformed into video segments, which are embedded within the decision-making tool to offer relatable, real-world perspectives. We developed an algorithm, content hub, and tracking mechanisms for the OA Compass tool. Guided by input from patients and doctors, question guides were also developed to support patients during conversations with their healthcare providers. These guides help facilitate discussions around diagnosis, treatment options, and surgical preparation, empowering patients to advocate for their care. The tool was designed to allow patients the flexibility to choose what topics they want to explore, enabling them to navigate their own unique path toward managing knee osteoarthritis effectively. By incorporating this patient-centered approach, OA Compass delivers a personalized, accessible resource tailored to individual needs. Results: To promote awareness of OA Compass among patients, a series of email campaigns was launched targeting the CreakyJoints (CJ), Global Healthy Living Foundation (GHLF), and PatientSpot (PSP) communities. Across six campaigns, a total of 27,330 emails were sent, with 8,370 unique opens, yielding an average open rate of 30.6% (range 23.2-53.7%). Preliminary feedback from users who engaged with the tool suggests that OA Compass effectively meets patients where they are in their knee OA journey. Users report improved understanding of available treatments and greater confidence in discussing options with their healthcare providers. The inclusion of video stories and patient tips has resonated strongly, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. Over 900 hours were spent by the public viewing the videos from this project within the six months since launching the tool (Table 1). Conclusion: OA Compass represents a significant advancement in digital tools for patient education and support. By providing a comprehensive, accessible, and personalized resource, it empowers patients with knee OA to actively engage in their care journey and make informed decisions. This tool highlights the importance of meeting patients where they are, fostering a collaborative approach to managing chronic conditions like osteoarthritis.
