AI-Powered Learning Analytics Dashboards: A Systematic Review of Applications, Techniques, and Research Gaps

Learning Analytics Dashboards (LADs) have become pivotal tools for supporting student learning by tracking, analyzing, and providing feedback. With the growing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), these systems increasingly offer predictive insights, personalized guidance, and real-time support for both learners and educators. This systematic literature review examines 21 peer-reviewed studies published between 2010 and 2024 that address the intersection of AI, Learning Analytics (LA), and LADs. Following PRISMA guidelines, the review classifies studies by AI techniques, data retrieval methods, and data visualization strategies. Results show a marked increase in AI-enhanced LAD research after 2022, yet also reveal ongoing challenges in data sourcing, ethical design, and the limited use of advanced AI approaches. This review provides a structured synthesis of current trends and identifies key research gaps to inform the future development of intelligent, ethical, and pedagogically grounded LADs.
