1174-P: Correlates of Pancreatic Fat Content and Volume in a General Risk Population of Youth

Introduction and Objective: Higher pancreatic fat (PF) and lower pancreatic volume (PV) are possible risk markers of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but their normative variation in childhood is under-studied. Our objective was to describe correlates of PF and PV in a general risk pediatric population. Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess PF and PV, hepatic fat (HF), and abdominal visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT & SAT) areas in 146 children (8-14 y) in the Colorado Healthy Start Study. Associations of child traits and adiposity measures with PF and PV were assessed using bivariate and multivariate regression. Results: Bivariate associations are shown in Table 1. PF and PV did not differ by prediabetes status, but PF was elevated in youth with obesity (Table 1). In multivariate regression models with age, sex, race/ethnicity, pubertal stage, BMI group, HF, VAT, and SAT as predictors and PF or PV as outcomes, SAT and HF were associated with PF (Std. β [95% CI]: 1.6% [0.7,2.5] for SAT; 0.5% [0.0,1.0] for HF), and pubertal stage was associated with PV (12.1 cm3 [1.2,22.9] for Tanner 4/5 vs. 1). There was also an inverse association of PV with PF (-0.5% [-0.9,-0.0]). Conclusion: These findings provide insights into factors associated with variation in PF (↑adiposity, ↓PV) and PV (↑pubertal maturation) among healthy youth.
