1945-LB: The T1D Parent Check-in—Preliminary Results of a Novel Intervention for Parents of Newly Diagnosed Children with Type 1 Diabetes

Introduction and Objective: This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of The T1D Parent Check-in, an innovative, 3 session, Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) specific telehealth intervention based in self-determination and cognitive behavioral theories to support parents in the first year of a child’s diagnosis. Secondary aims assessed impact on parenting, diabetes related distress, and resilience in parents from pre-to post-intervention compared to treatment as usual (TAU). Methods: Parents of children (8-17 yrs) diagnosed with T1D within the past 3-9 months were matched by child age and randomized to intervention or TAU. Feasibility was measured via recruitment and completion rate. Acceptability was measured with the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ) and qualitative analysis of open responses. Secondary outcomes were assessed via parent report of parenting style, diabetes-related distress (PAID), and parental resilience (CD-RISC-10), pre - to post - intervention using repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Twenty-seven percent of eligible parents contacted consented. Forty-one of 50 parents (38 mothers) completed pre - and post - measures (50 expected by June 2025). Parents rated the intervention positively (CSQ rating = 93/100, SD = 9.97, n = 21) with 100% retention / completion. Qualitative feedback suggests parents view The Check-in as a valuable and novel resource as they adjust to parenting in T1D. Results indicate medium to large time x condition effects of the Check-in on diabetes distress (F(1, 38) = 5.31, p =.02, ηp2 =0.12), autonomy support (F(1, 38) = 4.32, p =.04, ηp2 =0.10) and resilience (F(1,38) = 6.16, p =.01, ηp2 =0.14). Distress decreased and autonomy support and resilience increased for the Check-in group with no change for TAU. Conclusion: Results support The Check-in as feasible and acceptable with promising preliminary evidence of effectiveness to support families in the first year of T1D diagnosis. Future phases will evaluate effects at 1- and 6-months post-intervention. Disclosure E. O'Donnell: Consultant; eddii Inc. A. Caruso: None. G.A. Ding: None. N. Doble: None. A. Wheelock: None. D.
