Elementary Teacher Candidates’ Lines of Flight Toward Humanizing Science Assessments
Résumé fourni par la source
This study explores the navigation of elementary science teacher candidates (TCs) as they seek to humanize their assessments in an educational system that centers neoliberal testing practices. This paper is the first step in addressing the need for more research on supporting TCs who desire to implement humanizing pedagogy in their assessments. With rhizomatic analysis and the use of Deleuze and Guattari's concepts of territorialization, deterritorialization, and reterritorialization, we examine the lines of flight the TCs took in their science methods course (Dimitriadis & Kamberelis, 2006;St. Pierre, 2019).Findings show deterritorialization moves with the ways that TCs approached humanizing pedagogy in their talk and implementation of assessments. However, the findings demonstrate territorialization and reterritorialization moves as TCs planned these assessments in their 5E lessons. We discuss implications for promoting humanizing pedagogy in science assessments and supporting TCs as they navigate tensions.
